THE GAMMASONICS AWARDS OF THE AUSTRALASIAN RADIATION PROTECTION SOCIETY

THE RULES

1. Entrants for the awards must be financial members of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society of at least six months' standing who are employed in radiation protection or whose studies are leading to a qualification in a field related to radiation protection.  

2. There are two categories of award: a Young Achiever's Award and an Open Award. Entrants for the Young Achiever's Award must be 35 years of age or younger. Any member may enter for the Open Award.  

3. Entries will be limited to one per candidate. Previous award winners are ineligible to enter for further awards in the same category in which they had previously been successful.  

4. The awards will be made for work that yields new and significant data or procedures of scientific merit in the field of radiation protection or which applies established radiation protection principles to solve new operational problems.  

5. The material shall be presented as an oral paper at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society. Notification shall be given with the submission of the abstract that the presenter wishes to be judged for an award.  

6. Candidates must provide a statement signed by his or her department head indicating the extent of assistance received during the course of the work. The statement plus four copies of the full manuscript shall be in the hands of the Scientific Programme Organiser at least two weeks prior to the Conference.  

7. Papers submitted for the award shall be judged by a panel of three judges who must be either Members or Fellows of ARPS nominated by the Programme Organising Committee. The judges must not be drawn from the same institution as any of the candidates. The panel of judges shall have the power to co-opt other ARPS members as referees in any field of study not felt to be adequately covered by the expertise of the panel.  

8. The awards shall be decided on the following criteria:  

a. 30% significance of the data or method to the theory or practice of radiation protection  
b. 30% scientific method employed  
c. 15% originality (including allowance for contributions by other investigators)  
d. 15% quality of presentation  
e. 10% defence of work during question time.  

8. The award shall be presented at the closing ceremony of the Conference.  

9. The award winning papers shall be published in the ARPS Journal Radiation Protection in Australasia.
