Local Australian
science and medical manufacturer, Gammasonics Institute
for Medical Research, today signed a joint venture
agreement with USA firm Landauer Inc. to foster the
development of new Australian technology for measuring
radiation dosages.
Ms Sandra Nori,
Minister Assisting the Minister Assisting the Minister
for State Development said "This agreement establishes
a partnership to develop new technology for the measurement
of environmental and personal radiation dosage.
"Its benefits
go beyond cancer treatment as the technology accurately
measures the radiation dosages received by people
working in general scientific research, the military
and nuclear industry.
"The technology
has been developed at Gammasonics Institute for Medical
Research Pty Ltd, which received substancial support
from the NSW Goverment throught the Australian Technology
Showcase (ATS) program and Biofirst directory listing
since 1999.
"Gammasonics
was originally admited to the ATS for its lightweight
Gamma Probe radiation detector that precisely locates
cancerous cells.
"The company's
first commercial tumor detection products resulted
from research carried out at Wollongong University.
"The company
has received an ATS Export Grant support for activities
that included an international marketing consultancy.
As a result of
further product development, last year, Gammasonics
applied succesfully to participate in the ATS Technology
Demonstration Program, under which Gammasonics was
granted support to partner with a large organisation
to demonstrate three of its radiation detection technologies
that have applications in security and hospitals.
The Australian
Technology Showcase (ATS) has supported more than
430 NSW companies since its inception in 1997. As
a direct result of their participation in the ATS,
these companies have injected more than $530 million
into the NSW economy.
