Local Business Reaching New Heights
On Thursday, 10 November, local Five Dock
business Gammasonics Institute for Medical
Research secured an even bigger slice of the International market, signing a joint venture agreement with American company Landauer Inc., to foster the development of new Australian technology for the American and world markets.
'Gammasonics is a real champion for the City of Canada Bay. It is the type of sustainable and growth business that helps the City to build a new economic base', said Mayor Angelo Tsirekas. 'It is an outstanding achievement being the first Australian company to be recognised overseas for its work in the area of medical and scientific radiation detection.'
The joint venture will incorporate research and development for new technologies, the establishment of private dosimetry systems across Asia and the Middle East as well as Australian teaching facilities for the new technology which will target environmental, medical and diagnostic applications along with military and national anti-terrorism security applications.
Gammasonics is already known worldwide through the success of the Gamma probe, launched in the mid 1990’s, helping more than 100,000 patients undergo a less radical cancer treatment, with a proven success rate of 98%. Gammasonics’ current technology, produced in Australia, will also be distributed by Landauer throughout the United States, Japan, China and Europe.
This joint venture between the Gammasonics and Landauer Inc., is set to establish a partnership to develop new technology for applications in environmental personal monitoring and radiation patient dosimetry. The applications are significant to the military and nuclear industry, cancer treatment, homeland security and general scientific research.
Gammasonics is also on its way to revolutionising stress and cardiology testing in medicine with its recent launch of their Heartmaster Med Treadmill and Bike system which was recently attended by Mayor Angelo Tsirekas. The new equipment designed by Gammasonics is set to minimise the intrisicals and the possibilities of misleading information caused by electronics which is used with this type of equipment to collect data from patients. Rather than develop new technology or equipment, Gammasonics redesigns it in a simple and cost effective manner as they did with the Gamma probe in the 1990’s which is now recognised worldwide.
The Heartmaster Bike offers not only a treadmill, bike and ECG as well as telecardiology which will assist sport medicine in remote parts of Australia and other regions of the World for people to have access to professional cardiology advice without the need to be patients. Coronary Heart Disease remains the most common cause of sudden death in Autralia and according to the National Heart Foundation there is one death every 10 minutes from cardiovascular disease representing 38% of deaths.
