of Canada Bay Council formally adopted a
Local Agenda 21 Program on 21 May 2002 and is currently
developing a Local Action Plan.
Local
Agenda 21 is a program designed at implementing
sustainable development at the local level. It comprises
systems and procedures to integrate environmental,
economic and social development. Founded on a strong
partnership between local government and the community,
the progress toward local sustainable development
is guided by the preparation of a long-term strategic
action plan that integrates existing policies and
programs and a future direction.
Ecologically Sustainable
Development is a concept that is described by the
Intergovernmental Agreement on the Environment as;
"Using, conserving
and enhancing the community's resources so that the
ecological processes, on which life depends, are maintained,
and the total quality of life, now and in the future
can be increased."
